Interview: Joanna Ampil, Bloody Mary in South Pacific

Joanna is currently reprising her performance as Bloody Mary in South Pacific. 

Following an acclaimed run at Chichester Festival Theatre, Daniel Evans’ revival of South Pacific is back for a run at Sadler’s Wells ahead of a UK and Ireland tour.

Joanna made her West End debut as Kim in Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and went on to play the role in the original Australian production, the original UK and Ireland tour and 10th anniversary West End performance. 

Her other West End roles have included Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, both Éponine and Fantine in Les Misérables, Christmas Eve in Avenue Q and Sheila Franklin in Hair. 

Joanna is renowned for starring as Grizabella in Cats all over the world. In Manila she has played Mimi in Rent, Francesca Johnson in The Bridges of Madison County, Maria in West Side Story and Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music as well as Nellie in a concert production of South Pacific. 

Most recently, Joanna starred as Jenna in the international premiere of Waitress in Manila. 

South Pacific runs at Sadler’s Wells 27th July – 28th August 2022 before touring the UK and Ireland from 13th September. Visit for info, tour dates and tickets.
